About Thrive Personal Training

What we know is that people who are in pain recruit muscles in the wrong order compared to people who do not have pain. This can result in imbalances in the way various muscles are controlled, as well as abnormal recruitment and sequencing of muscles during functional movements.

In addition to dysfunctional sequences of muscle activation, imbalances between antagonistic muscles have also been identified in people who suffer from pain.

We know that every BODY is uniquely different and physically moves differently based on genetics, injuries, imbalances, and more.

Building positive muscle memory requires the body to learn (or re-learn) how to activate the right muscles, with the right movements, at the right time (neuromuscular activation), to position, hold or move body parts into place, whilst maintaining awareness of their relative position to the other moving and stationary parts (proprioception).

Training Programs

Training with a coach is different. It’s logical, regimented, and planned over the long-term, to produce a specific adaption. Every rep of every work set you do in our gym will be actively coached by a Personal Trainer.

Powerlifting, once you dive in, is gripping. It’s more than a workout—it’s training for a specific, and refreshingly simple, purpose: to improve the most you can lift in the squat, bench press, and deadlift.

There are 7 basic movements the human body can perform: Push, Pull, Lunge, Squat, Hinge, Rotation & Gait. When performing all of these movements, you will be able to stimulate all of the major muscle groups in your body.

Functional Training looks like movements that you make in your daily life. It can be helpful for athletic performance, injury prevention, and other everyday fitness tasks.

Small Group Training Workshop

This is an introduction class that you need to take prior to joining the Small Group Classes. The Movement Workshop is an immersive 60-minute exposure to training with a Coach. During this session, your coach will take you through mobility, strength, and cardio testing.  The testing is needed to help create your individualized training program & to better monitor you throughout your group sessions. Included in the session is an explanation of the ‘why’ and the ‘how” as well as a discussion about the programming basics and the equipment you will need. Completion of the Movement Workshop is required before joining the Team Training Sessions.

During the Movement Workshop our Coaches will gain scientific insight into your VO2 Max, heart rate, training zones, anaerobic thresholds, and more!  We will then understand how to train more effectively to improve your performance.

Thrive's Functional Model

Chiropractor Kate Cox based in Amsterdam, explains the Functional Model she uses at Thrive, and why it is so vital to understand the interaction between the joint, muscle, and neurologic systems of the body as it relates to movement.

The three pillars of the functional model include the:

  • Control System (our central nervous system consisting of the brain and spinal cord)
  • Active system (muscles)
  • Passive system (mainly the joints in this case).

These 3 systems must be working together to be able to function properly. If one of the systems is awry and not working properly, it can produce various symptoms including poor quality movement, pain with movement, loss of strength,  abnormal muscle recruitment, etc. This is why it is vital that the Modern Day Health Care Providers assess all three of these systems, and make sure to address any dysfunctions in either system to give patients the best possible outcomes.

At Thrive, our chiropractors, physical therapists, strength and conditioning specialists, and massage therapists are implementing this Functional model. The results have been pretty awesome, showing that by combining the chiropractic adjustment, with manual muscular therapy, and with exercise, clients get better results!

A typical patient progression in our clinic consists, of:

Pain > Altered Functional Movement > Mobility > Stability > Normal Functional Movement > Strength > Power.

This progression is very important to understand because people who skip to the strength and power portions of this model by lifting weights and training can pre-dispose themselves to injury if they are not first getting to the “Normal Functional Movement” stage.

Private Personal Training

Whether you are coming back from an injury or just prefer working with your coach one-to-one – we’ve got options. Every rep of every work set you do in our gym will be actively coached by a Specialized Coach.  Our simple and logical approach to barbell training works every single time it is applied correctly for long-term, quantifiable progress.

Exercise can get you sweaty, get your heart pumping, or quickly burn a few calories.  Personal trainers can make up a new workout each day and tell you that exercise variety is key.  Random exercise with no clear long-term goal or intent is not training and at the end of the day, random workouts are not scalable, quantifiable and they don’t get results.

Training with a coach is different. It’s logical, regimented, and planned over the long-term, to produce a specific adaption. You will actually see (and feel) your progress each day as the weights slowly increase.  All you need to do is show up and get under the bar.

At Thrive Movement Gym, we train on an appointment basis where there are never more than 8 people in the training facility.  That way, you’ll never miss and you’ll never wait for equipment.  Maximum of 8 clients per 60-minute block (online booking).

Regardless of age, sex or ability, there IS a weight at which you can start your journey towards building a stronger, more useful body.  From the professional athlete to the 52-year-old ultrarunner and everyone in between, Thrive Movement is equipped and qualified to get you stronger than you thought possible.

Our Landmine program is meant to blend the best parts of weightlifting and functional training. Mastering & strengthening these movements can result in performance increases in explosive athletic movements, including sprinting, grappling, and punching.

Cross-training is any workout that complements your normal routine, helping to even out potential muscle imbalances or weaknesses. Cross-training is a way to vary your fitness program by combining different types of exercise activities. What you have to decide is what purpose it is going to serve.  Cross-training should improve your cardio, strengthen your muscles, or help speed your recovery. It ultimately enhances your fitness level while reducing your likelihood of injury.
